Climbing Kilimanjaro and Safari

Many of our guests were aware that we were closing for a few weeks of vacation and enjoying a climb on Kilimanjaro and a safari (climb for Robin, safari for all of us). We are safely back in Freeport, having had a great time away (our first in five years)! Robin did great on his climb, despite unusually cold temperatures and blinding sand storms. Kilimanjaro is 19,340 feet to the summit and Robin made it to 17,500 feet before the sand took over and caused temporary loss of site, forcing him to come down. He had an amazing experience and we are proud of his accomplishment. The safari was unbelievable! We saw the migration and as Elyse says “all of the animals possible.” We will gladly share pictures and stories with anyone interested. It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside?

Oddly, it isn’t cold outside. We are experiencing one of the warmest winters on record. Today is no exception at 45 degrees and plenty of sunshine. While the winter sports fans are sad due to the lack of snow, the weather reminds some that spring is not far away. Time to start planning your Maine vacation. Perhaps the Maine Flower Show will get you started in thinking spring and be your first visit to Maine for 2012. This is March 7-11 and is one of my favorite events of the spring season. It is easy to while away a day here and makes a perfect start to a girlfriend weekend. Spend time shopping in Freeport, fine dining…and think of spring.

Winter’s Outdoor Sports

The good news; we received about six inches of beautiful powdery snow last Thursday. The bad news; rain came on top of it. The cold temperatures have been great for outdoor ice rinks. The cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails now have some base. Groomed trails, such as those at scenic Pineland Farms, are ready for those looking for an afternoon of outdoor fun and adventure. Enjoy a few hours of cross-country skiing and fresh air. Afterwards, enjoy the cafe at Pineland Farms for a warm cup of soup or hot chocolate. A great way to spend a winter afternoon!

Ice Skating Rink in Freeport

Well, there certainly is not much snow to enjoy this season however, the recent cold weather has enabled the town to open the rink for ice skating. Just two blocks away from James Place Inn is the new skating rink. It was frozen over last week and is ready for skaters. Head to Freeport and pack the snow shoes, cross-country skis and ice skates. This way you are covered no matter what the weather brings. And who knows? The forecast for today is 3-5 inches of snow. We’ll let you know what happens!

Yoga Studio in Freeport

A yoga studio has moved into Freeport, occupying the space of the old Bow Street Market. The new studio, Freeport Yoga, offers a great selection of yoga classes. There is something for everyone, offered throughout the day and including some weekend classes. I enjoyed my first class there today and it was a real workout! The instructors are well trained and lead a wll thoughtout class. The space is bright and airy. If you enjoy yoga and like to keep up when traveling, I can heartily recommend the newest addition to our town.

After Christmas Sales

Bean, Cole Haan, North Face…just to name a few. Do some shopping, see a movie, have a delicious dinner. Treat yourself after the holiday rush.

Winter Weather Arrives

After a very mild November and early December, the temperatures have turned chilly here in Freeport. No snow for skiing or snowshoeing quite yet however, it cannot be far behind. It certainly does make it feel a bit more like Christmas. All of Freeport is lit up and the streets have been busy with holiday shoppers. And winter solstice is just days away – always a sure sign that the days will become longer and warmer days will be here sooner than we know it. Happy Holidays to all and we look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Freeport’s New Years Eve Celebration

Sparkle Weekend

Sparkle Weekend in Freeport was a huge success! Held the first full weekend of every December, Sparkle weekend is special here in Freeport. There are so many activities to choose from: L.L. Bean has the Northern Lights celebration, horse drawn carriage rides down the decorated streets of Freeport, hot cocoa stands around the town, and of course a parade to start the weekend off and bringthe arrival of Santa to town! The weather this year was quite warm and the crowds were out to see Santa pull into town on his lobster boat. Put this wonderful weekend on your list of holiday treats for 2012, December 7-9. You don’t want to miss it!

The Theatres Are Here!

The new Nordica Theater on Depot Street

Freeport is now home to a new six-screen movie theatre, including a 3-D screen. The Nordica Theatre opened just before Thanksgiving. Nice stadium-style seating. It is an easy walk, just two blocks, from the Inn. Enjoy an afternoon matinee as a break from shopping or have “date night” with dinner and a movie.
