An old house entering a new chapter
Original floors and woodwork. Seven distinctive guest rooms. New stewardship with a respect for what guests already value.
A house that was worth saving
The James Place Inn was built around 1891 and is believed to be one of several Freeport homes associated with local businessman and shoe manufacturer E. B. Mallett. Nearly a century later, the house had fallen into serious disrepair and was slated for demolition.
Darcy and Bill James saved it in 1994, rebuilding the house as a bed and breakfast. The work took the building down to the studs while preserving much of its original character, including the hardwood floors, front staircase, wood trim, window casings, and exterior structure. In 2001, they added the owners’ quarters at the back of the property.
Each set of innkeepers has left its mark. Tori and Robin Baron took over in 2006, adding and refining guest spaces, including the Wisteria Room. Mary Ann and Bill Hinko followed in 2019 and made further updates throughout the property, from the signature red roof to the pollinator garden and fire pit at the front of the inn.
Today, James Place is not a typical hotel—and it was never meant to feel like one. Its floors, stairs, room shapes, and details belong to a house that has been thoughtfully adapted over time. That individuality is part of its character, and every room offers something a little different.
Sean and Charlie
Sean and Charlie are the inn's newest stewards and live on site with their dogs, Baxter and Ivy. Their goal is to preserve what already works - the walkable location, distinctive rooms, breakfast, and useful common spaces - while making your stay clearer, simpler, and more flexible.
You will not need to organize your trip around us. We will send clear arrival information, answer questions by phone, and be nearby when something needs attention. We are equally happy to recommend a trail or dinner and to let you discover Freeport on your own.
What to expect in 2026
Throughout 2026, the James Place Inn remains the experience guests have come to love: the same seven room names and amenities, private bathrooms, and breakfast at 8:00 or 9:00 each morning. Changes will be introduced thoughtfully and communicated before they affect a reservation.
For now, our promise is straightforward: accurate information, a clean and comfortable room, a generous breakfast, an excellent Freeport location, and help when you need it.
