The Portland Science Center in Portland, Maine is a great addition to the offering of activities in and around the Freeport area. Located just twenty minutes to the south of Freeport, Portland Science Center opened last fall with the “Body Works” exhibit. The current exhibit is a “double-feature” with “Space: A Journey To Our Future” and “The Robot Zoo.” This is a great place to bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun, with a side benefit of education.
The Portland Science Center is the first of its kind for Maine and holds the most engaging and unique traveling attractions ever presented. Showcasing subject matter from education and STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields, to cultural phenomena and the majestic marvels of the world, the Portland Science Center provides awesome exhibitions with a lasting impact.
The mission of the Portland Science Center is to “create an engaging and sustainable exhibition center that serves the community and has a significant impact on audiences of all ages.” This is achieved through the belief in the power of learning brought to life through entertainment.
Utilizing renovated and reimagined space within the cultural hub of the Maine Wharf with over 15,000 square feet of premium exhibition space, the vision for the Portland Science Center is to be the prime “edu-tainment” venue to showcase the most successful exhibitions ever presented to the greater state of Maine and Northern New England. The Portland Science Center is poised to serve as Maine’s leading destination for learning and exploration within the illuminating world of blockbuster exhibitions.
Located in the heart of the Old Port in Portland, the Portland Science Center is easy to find. There is plenty of parking in and around the area and Portland has no shortage of great places to eat before or after viewing the exhibit. We made a day of it by visiting the Science Center, having lunch at a favorite spot, Flatbread, and then doing a little shopping. The current “Space” exhibit features plenty of hands-on action to keep the kids happy! Enjoying a vacation without kids? The exhibits are perfect for adults and the kid in all of us. Make your way to the Portland Science Center for a cool experience. You will surely enjoy it.
