My opinion of course however, September is the best month in Maine, and Freeport. The air has a bit of crispness to it, particularly in the early morning and late evening. Typically, days are warm and sunny while the nights are cool, making sleeping perfect. There are enough people out and about to keep things interesting however, the crowds of July and August are gone. The pace also quiets a bit – people don’t seem quite so intent on having to “see and do everything.” It is more relaxed, time to sit and enjoy, not do. Afterall, that is what vacation is all about – a bit of time to relax.
For those looking for things to do, there are still plenty of opportunities. Sailing is one of them as September holds some of the best sailing of the year. With fewer boats on the water and more room to let the sails out and go. (I love the smell of the ocean and we can smell it from our Inn in Freeport when there is an on-shore breeze). Add a lobster roll and you have the makings of a perfect day. Another favorite activity is apple picking, then making apple pie. Actually, our favorite apple orchard has amazing donuts – my primary purpose for going apple picking! What’s better than cider and donuts? We send a lot of guests here as well as it is a beautiful spot and makes for part of a perfect fall day. So, come enjoy Maine in September. Mid-week is espcially nice if your schedule allows!
